Lewis & Clark Riverboat Docked on Missouri River Shore - Bismarck, North Dakota

The Lewis and Clark Riverboat in Bismarck, North Dakota offers nightly dinner cruises, in addition to charters for special events such as weddings or employee picnics. It is owned and operated by the Fort Abraham Lincoln Foundation.

It is supposed to resemble the classic steamboats that reguarly traveled the Missouri River through the Bismarck-Mandan area during the late 1800s. The most well known steamboat captain, Grant Marsh commanded the Far West. The Interstate 94 bridge, which runs overhead of the Riverboat's port, was named for Grant Marsh when completed in 1965.

Historic Patterson/McKenzie Hotel in Downtown Bismarck, North Dakota

Opened New Year's Day, 1911 as the McKenzie Hotel, then renamed Patterson in 1923, the building is well-known for its continued construction that lasted nearly 30 years. The Patterson Hotel was also known for its political connections, serving as headquarters for the Nonpartisan League.

The Patterson Hotel secretly served alcohol during prohibition, and had even installed an electronic alarm system to keep out "unwanted guests". It was also host to illegal gambling, and rumored to house prostitutes. Rumors also exist that an underground tunnel once connected the hotel with the train depot located across the street.

The hotel closed in the mid 1970s, and was condemned in 1980, at which time it underwent major renovation. Today, the former hotel rooms now house Patterson Place Senior Apartments and the lobby houses Peacock Alley Bar & Grill.

The brown building in the foreground once housed J.C. Penney before it relocated to Kirkwood Mall in 1980. It now houses Discontent and Seeds of Hope Thrift Store. J.C. Penney first came to Bismarck in 1929 upon purchasing local store McCracken, however had a location in Mandan since 1920. This was one of four downtown locations for Penneys before it relocated to Kirkwood.

Historic Row of Buildings on Main Avenue in Downtown Bismarck, North Dakota

Building in foreground was constructed in 1913* to house City National Bank. F.W. Woolworth later occupied the building until relocating to Kirkwood Mall in 1971. It then housed Goldies Furniture for some time. Today it houses Shooters Billiards.

The Patterson Hotel is clearly recognizable in the background. The row of building between were all built in or around 1905-1906.

*Official city documentation lists the City National Bank/Woolworth building as constructed in 1913, however it was certainly already around by 1911 because of newspaper clippings of the time and a postcard I found dated January 1911 showing the completed building. Woolworth occupied the building around 1915.
